The Power of Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy or psychodynamic psychotherapy is derived from Freud's theories and is an approach that aims to unravel areas of your past that could be leading you to behave in a harmful way in the present. The key to unearthing past experiences and events that could be leading to current behaviours is a good relationship with your therapist as these conversations need to occur in a safe, non judgemental space. The client needs to explore their past experiences and thought processes and explore whether these are influencing their actions in the here and now. If a client can understand why they act as they do then they can try to control their emotions and use coping techniques to try to control the negative thoughts and behaviours that are causing them and others distress and heartache.

Psychodynamic therapy helps a client make sense of their feelings and actions and gives them back the power to control these feelings and can help with many different problems such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders and addictions. Therapy can help individuals who feel unhappy make sense of where their unhappiness stems from and with this understanding can bring a sense of relief. The therapist acts as a guide, journeying with the client as they explore their past and their feelings, trying to make sense of what past events are still influencing them negatively in the present.
