Group Therapy

Book an initial assessment today

We provide group therapy sessions for a whole range of mental health difficulties from relationship issues to dealing with anxiety. The sessions are run by an experienced psychologist who encourages the exploration of here and now emotions and thinking processes between group members and the group psychologist themselves.

What is group therapy?

Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy where one or more therapists treat a small group of clients together. Group therapy, like individual psychotherapy, is intended to help people who would like to improve their ability to cope with difficulties and problems in their lives. Its real value comes from the interpersonal nature of the experience that often mirrors experiences encountered in the world outside, the key difference being, the presence of an experienced therapist to intervene, interpret, offer insight and guidance. The therapist uses the emotional interactions of the group members to help them get relief from distress and modify their behaviour where appropriate.

The aim of group psychotherapy is to help with solving the emotional difficulties and to encourage the intra- and interpersonal development of the participants in the group. At least 3, and usually more, group members are necessary to establish the critical mass that allows the types of interactions that give the psychotherapy group its unique character. 5 to 10 members is considered an ideal number.

What is the composition of the groups and how often do they meet?

The groups are heterogenous in nature which means that it is not inevitable that all group members have the same presenting difficulties. In reality, clinical experience informs us that there is much overlap between individuals and copious opportunities to learn from each others experience. It is also helpful to listen to and interact with people who don't necessarily entirely share our world view or similar difficulties.

The groups are ongoing, meet weekly and are more suitable for people requiring longer term therapy (1-2 years min) rather than for short durations.

What does it cost?

Group therapy cost £45 per session with a chartered psychologist or £35 with a UKCP approved psychotherapist.

How can I join?

The first step is to arrange for an initial assessment in which you will make an appointment to spend some time with the therapist in question, exploring history, presenting difficulties and general objectives to group therapy. From there, if agreed, you will be set a start date to begin one of our groups.
